July 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 2009
I can’t be more emphatic about the quality of
the ‘rising trout/dry fly, sight fishing’ on the l ower
Clark Fork
(and the Bitterroot). Seventeen
to twenty inch wild rainbows and browns sip mayflies and caddis and
zip into your backing. They
call these rainbows “firecrackers” and they are by far the
“hottest” fish in the West.
In the past, we’ve been hooking 30-50
fish per float – these sipping fish are 17” to 20+”, not
enormous but seldom will you land a fish under 16”.
I’ve made special arrangements so that our
floats start 9:
00ish
in the AM and go until about
10:00 PM
, 12+ hour floats are a rarity in the West.
The guides are a cut above the rest and I give
them extra compensation for the extra hours.
Almost all other guides leave the river at
5:00
or
6:00 PM
, long before the incredible caddis hatches begin (
7:30-10:00 PM
) and these bring up every trout in the river.
Our guides are very flexible and should you want to leave the
river earlier, it is not a problem.
Included is a late afternoon hot dinner right on the river.
Whether it’s grilled elk, beef or chicken with salads,
veggies and breads. A
bottle of Merlot, Cabernet or Chardonnay, topped off with a nice
cigar (if you wish) – it always tastes better on the river!
After a well deserved streamside rest on the bank, it’s
back to sipping trout until dark.
The
Clark Fork
trip (and the
Missouri River
trip) is simply the best dry
fly “sight fishing’ venues in the world today!
And this is the best part – aside from our own party, you will seldom see another boat or wading angler on many stretches of
the Clark Fork, truly amazing (Click here to see photos from the Clark
Fork and Bitterroot).
Accommodations
are superb. We stay
at the luxurious Double Tree Hotel right at the junction of the
Lower Clark Fork
and Rattlesnake Creek. From
the dining deck you can spot rainbows sipping on the hotel’s
private access water from the new Edgewater dining deck.
The food is great and the rooms are spacious with oversized
beds, plush furnishings and balconies overlooking the river.
Our
Missoula
,
Montana
trip is now in its 15th consecutive year.
I can’t conceive of missing a July trip to
Missoula
to fish these two great rivers.
I’ve been fortunate enough to do this trip for 20
consecutive years!
